Plant A Million Mangroves for Cebu

Fri, Mar 14th 2008, 08:45

December 15, 2007 - Obong, Dalaguete, Cebu.

Around 10,000 mangrove seedlings and propagules were planted by at least 100 people during the annual Mangrove planting activity at Barangay Obong, Dalaguete last December 15, 2007.

The activity was dubbed as “Kalambuan sa Katunggan Year 3.” This project was in coordination with the Provincial Government of Cebu’s “Plant A Million Mangroves” program of Governor Gwen Garcia, and in cooperation with the Municipality of Dalaguete, the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation, Inc. (CCEF), Vicsal Foundation, Inc. and Taft Property Venture Development Corporation (Taft Property).

Dalaguete Municipal Mayor Andrade Alcantara said the project will enable local fisherfolks to sustain livelihood noting that mangroves are home to animals such as fish, prawn and crabs.

Barangay Obong Captain Aldrin Maranon said the tie-up is a welcomed development as it aims to aid locals in the barangay.

One of the reasons why Dalaguete, of all the municapilities in the province, was chosen as a planting site is because of the support of the local government officials, said Taft Property Engineering Department Manager Marivic Secretaria. "We also want to erase the notion that as developers, we are not concerned with environment... we want to help improve the ecosystem. With the successful restoration of the mangrove ecosystem, the five-hectare area will hopefully become a tourist spot in the future which features a long stream of restaurants and a mangrove sanctuary," she said.

Taft Property Business Development Group Manager Fausto Lim said the activity is a part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. "CSR is not only the responsibility of top management officials. It is also your task to develop your co-workers as it (CSR) goes beyond class boundaries," Lim said.

According to Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation Inc. (CCEF) training coordinator Maretes Alenton, the Philippines has a total of 450, 000 mangrove hectares in 1918. This depleted to 138, 000 hectares in 1993. “If reduction of mangroves continue at the post 1980 rate, there will be less than 100, 000 hectares left in the year 2030,” she said.

The activity was also organized in cooperation with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Municipal Agriculture and Natural Resources Office (MANRO), Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation and the Dalaguete Bantay Dagat Police.
